Africa Rising Part One

Africa Rising

There’s an African heat wave sweeping across fashion at the moment. From Selfridges bringing Ndani, the Nigerian Fashion Project showcasing the best of Lagos Fashion and Design Week to London; Vogue Italia offering the world an all-African affair in the May 2012 issue, to some well deserved kudos for Africa Fashion Week London, which is now in its third year. Africa is certainly in the midst of a fashion renaissance.

Here Samantha Kitula, our intern, showcases her favourite designer from a recent visit to Kenya.

Kenya is a country known for its scorching sun and sensational safaris, but is very quickly emerging as a fashion and design hotspot where artisanal craftsmanship and couture-like designs are heralding a new spirit; a new standard.

Liz Ogumbo is someone that optimises this new spirit with her latest label collaboration – Rekebisha, partnered with Saris For Good Karma, a non-profit organisation geared at improving the lives of underprivileged women in South Africa through skills development. The garments are designed and produced in Africa with what the team calls an Indo-African fashion fusion by offering signature pieces, through recycled saris and a marriage of traditional Kenyan textile patterns.

Liz is a model, performer and designer. Her designs are so varied that it’s impossible not to find something you love. This young lady designs for every occasion; office wear to bridal wear using fabrics and patterns similar to the much loved traditional Kenyan kitenge’s. I (and the rest of the Showroom Online team) just can’t wait to see what you will do next Liz.
